I prefer starting in Meiringen and finishing near Wassen.
The section towards Furka Pass is wider and better surfaced; beyond the pass, the road narrows and the asphalt has a few minor imperfections. Expect more cars, motorcyclists and cyclists than on Susten — on my most recent drive, I even encountered a coach.
05 — FEATURED PASS
My favourite direction is Wassen to Meiringen.
The climb is wide, smooth and gives a sports car room to use its power and grip; the narrower, twistier descent rewards a calmer rhythm. Across 51 km and roughly one hour without stops, Susten gave me the best mix of rock, green valleys, summer snow, light traffic and memorable cars.
06 — FEATURED PASS
I recommend driving from Altdorf UR to Glarus Nord.
Over 72 km and about 1.5 hours without stops, the narrow, winding road calls for the calmest pace of these three passes. The reward is a landscape-led journey through green valleys, rock walls, waterfalls and picturesque villages — a route worth stopping for often.

For me, the BMW Z4 M40i is the sweet spot between sports car and long-distance comfort — a classic roadster shape with the ability to cross Europe like a compact GT.
The long bonnet, very low seating position and a seat placed close to the rear axle make the car easy to feel through a corner. It is stable and confidence-inspiring, yet opening the roof adds another dimension to the sound of the three-litre straight-six.
With 340 hp and strong torque from low revs, the B58 suits steep climbs and tight corner exits perfectly. The gearbox does not need to hunt for gears, so progress feels smooth; driven calmly it is surprisingly efficient, while a harder push always reveals more performance.
Two tall occupants have genuinely generous space and the boot holds almost 300 litres whether the roof is open or closed. I have completed several journeys of more than 1,000 km and can confidently call it a GT. Physical controls, two clear displays and the head-up display also make it easy to stay focused on the road.
On a dynamic descent from an Alpine pass, you can feel the brakes building heat. They continue to work, but for repeated mountain driving this is the one area where I would welcome more reserve.
