FIRST-HAND ALPINE DRIVING GUIDE
A slower road into the high Alps.
Furka Pass is the route I choose when the scenery matters more than keeping a rhythm through the corners. It is dramatic, unmistakably Alpine and absolutely worth seeing, provided you arrive with the right expectations.
A DRIVER'S PERSPECTIVE
BMW Z4 M40i · SWITZERLANDI prefer starting in Meiringen and finishing near Wassen. The section from Meiringen towards Furka Pass is wider and has a better road surface, making the drive smoother and more comfortable.
Beyond the pass, towards Wassen, the road becomes narrower and the asphalt has a few minor imperfections. This part is best driven at a calmer pace and with a little more attention, while still offering beautiful scenery and a true high-Alpine atmosphere.
Furka Pass is usually busier than Susten. Alongside cars, motorcyclists and cyclists are a regular presence, and popular parking areas can fill quickly.
On my most recent drive, I even encountered a coach on this narrow section. Patience, safe spacing and a relaxed approach matter more here than trying to maintain a quick rhythm.
There is more landscape to absorb across this longer route: high rock, changing mountain horizons and viewpoints that make it natural to stop. Even though Furka does not match the driving freedom I felt on Susten, it remains a beautiful Swiss Alpine road trip.
For drivers who prefer taking their time, photographing the scenery and accepting busier viewing areas, Furka is an easy recommendation.
I would treat two hours without major stops as a realistic base for this drive, then add time for viewpoints and traffic. Weekends require more flexibility than quieter days.
